For the second year running, clients and staff of Te Kupenga Hauora – Ahuriri participated in the 17th Annual New Balance Great Lake Relay, as the ‘Ahuriri Flyers’, and boy did they fly!! This event, held on the 17th and 18th February 2012, was a non-stop relay around the largest lake in Australasia – Lake Taupo.
Those who participated said that this was the best team building exercise of all time, the ultimate team relay that has been described as the most social and scenic event in New Zealand. Over 4500 participants from all over New Zealand participated in the 155 km event last year, in teams of 10 or 18. All proceeds raised goes to Mental Health.
This year, eight ‘Ahuriri Flyers’ joined thousands of others in completing this gruelling challenge. Several kaumatua from the Te Kupenga Hauora – Ahuriri Kahui Pakeke roopu travelled especially to Lake Taupo to support the walkers.
The ‘Ahuriri Flyers’ team included second timers Ginger Kuru, Richard Romana, Leslie Tata, Patrick Hooper, David Coulson, Veronica Young, Anaru Robin, Robert Robin and Jiles Middleton who once again walked the talk and competed in the relay. Ginger Kuru was supported by his grandson Dylan Kuru from Christchurch, now a Year 10 student at Napier Boys High School who lives with his grandfather.
