The event commenced for the ‘Ahuriri Flyers’ with Taetuli Tuala, Navigator of the Whānau Ora contract for Te Kupenga Hauora – Ahuriri. He started in the darkness on Friday night at 9 p.m, all pumped and rearing to go on his 14.4 kilometre walk, which he completed in 1 hour and 55 minutes.
Robert Robin completed Leg two, 14.1 kilometres in 2 hours and 15 minutes, with 4.7 kilometres of this straight uphill. The rest of the 16 Legs were completed by Healthy Lifestyles clients and supporters Richard Romana and his wife Sue, Ginger Kuru and grandson Dylan, Leslie Tata, Patrick Hooper, David Coulson, Anaru and his wife Maria Robin, Lil Aranui, Tim Edwards, Marewa King, and staff of Te Kupenga Hauora – Ahuriri and their families.
Also supporting this kaupapa were Chief Executive Officer, Audrey Robin, Board Chairperson, Te Maari Joe, with staff and supporters. The last leg of 7.5 kms was completed by Naomi Whitewood, Strategic Business Manager, which enabled the team to complete the relay in 20 hours and 21 minutes.
From the darkness into the light the walkers came, completing their walks with enthusiasm and gusto. They gave it all that they had and then some.
