Family Start is an intensive home visiting programme that focuses on improving our Tamariki growth, health, learning and relationships, whanau circumstances, environment and safety. Using a whanau ora approach of encompassing the whole whanau.
You will help whanau who are struggling with challenges or problems that may make it harder for them to care for their Pepi or Tamariki.
- Support whanau in their homes to build positive parenting skills
- Work in Napier City with a supportive multicultural team
- Help the whanau navigate external organisations such as MSD or Oranga Tamariki where and if needed.

Te Kupenga Hauora – Ahuriri provides independent healthcare and social services to families in Napier and Hawke’s Bay from a Kaupapa Maori perspective. The Family Start programme is a free service covering Ahuriri that supports whanau in their whare as they raise their tamariki, with the aim of improving the whanau circumstances for the benefit of the parents and children. You’ll visit whanau weekly to deliver the programme and to make follow-up checks on how they’re going.
You’ll need to be a realistic and resilient person to succeed in this role. These are families who face significant and serious challenges, and you’ll need to be able to gain their trust and get them onboard. There’s a fine balancing act between connecting with whanau, making them feel valued and respected and knowing when they need to be referred on.
A Level 7 Diploma or Degree qualification in a discipline relevant to working with children and their families/whānau is compulsory (eg Social Work / Teaching / Nursing degrees), as well as experience in community work and in building good relationships with support agencies and families.
It’s certainly not the easiest role, but you’ll have as mall, supportive and diverse team to work with, and when things go well, you’ll get the very real satisfaction of helping turn lives around. You’ll begiving help where it’s really needed and working to help keep babies and children safe.
